Extra Credit Question 3
"Mr. Pontellier followed him closely. He meant to stop at the wedding on his way to New York and endeavor by every means which money and love could devise to atone somewhat for Edna's incomprehensible action.
"You are too lenient, too lenient by far, Léonce," asserted the Colonel. "Authority, coercion are what is needed. Put your foot down good and hard; the only way to manage a wife. Take my word for it."
The Colonel was perhaps unaware that he had coerced his own wife into her grave. Mr. Pontellier had a vague suspicion of it which he thought it needless to mention at that late day." (Chapter 24)

Extra Credit Question One (Chpt 1-5)
From what we know about Edna so far can what can we say about her parenting? Is she a good or bad mom? Who are our reference points that we can compare Edna to? Explain.
Responses
Responding to topic:
Answer all of these questions to the best of your ability. If your topic is not in the chapter that is being reading that evening do the next topic for that evening. Remember this will help you greatly when it comes to test time (open blog, novel, notes test) so put as much information as possible.
Describe the context in which topic was brought up in.
Who said it/did it?
How was Edna affected by it?
How were others affected by it?
What do you feel this relates to the larger text in whole?
Has this topic changed in from the last chapter?
Responding to questions:
I will ask a question every night about your readings. You then have the option of answering after or before class, but it must be done in the time allotted. Meaning you may not answer a question about readings 1-5 when we are at 20-25. You MUST also respond to another students answer, eventually creating a dialogue between all of us. If you end up missing a 2 days of responses and we have already moved on, you have the option of doing extra credit response to make up for the work missed.

Welcome Women's Literature!
Kate Chopin's The Awakening is a novel written during a time of great change in 1899. During this time the Civil War has been over for over 30 years, the Industrial Revolution was winding down and women voices were rising up.
Chopin took advantage of the quickly changing times and wrote a novel that was considered by many at that time to be immoral and very risky content for the southern mind. Although always considered a very gifted writer the harsh criticism did not deter Chopin from writing other great novels. Chopin, although not considered to be an activist feminist, uses female heroin to convey the truth, as seen through her eyes.
First and foremost this blog is for you and your betterment. In order for you to improve your understanding of your readings each night this blog will help you sort out key elements needed for the comprehension of the novel. It may seem fragmented and odd now but when test time comes around this blog will serve as a great tool for remembering and sorting out lost details that are crucial for understanding.
We are keeping a blog because it will track down the progression of the main character Edna Pontellier and her encounters with the following;
Sea/water
Solitude/Freedom/Independence
Habit
Sleeping/Awake
Leónce Pontellier/Alcee Arobin/ Robert Lebrun

LibriVox- Free Aduio Book
Here is a website that has the recording of "The Awakening." LibriVox is a free service that provides audio books from the public domain. Its a great service and you should feel free to constantly use this to better understand the book. In my experience its always been better if someone were to read the book to me and mark (talking to the text) as I go along. LibriVox is a completely volunteer based service, don't expect a performance but do expect quailty. Just copy and paste the link and enjoy!
